Buenos Aires, March 4 (NA) – The interrogation of the president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, in the case investigating alleged irregularities related to pension contributions and taxes was postponed to March 12 after a change of lawyer was presented. According to what Argentine News Agency was able to learn, the change in legal representation forced the hearing to be rescheduled. The investigation, which is being handled by the Economic Criminal Court, seeks to determine if there were irregularities in the withholding and payment of taxes related to Argentine football, in a case that also reaches other AFA leaders and has generated a strong repercussion in the sports and political sphere. The Justice had rejected this Tuesday the request that Tapia had made to suspend his interrogation, set for March 5. Tapia's defense had requested last Friday that the summons to his interrogation be declared null in the case that investigates an alleged undue withholding of contributions for more than $19.353 million. The Economic Criminal Court judge, Diego Amarante, decided last February 19 to summon Tapia, the treasurer Pablo Toviggino and other leaders in a case that investigates the alleged misappropriation of tax withholdings. He had also prohibited both from leaving the country, four months before the World Cup in the United States, although later he granted Tapia the corresponding permission. The case investigates the alleged misappropriation of more than $19.353 million corresponding to tax withholdings and social security contributions between March 2024 and September 2025. The tax agency ARCA, ex AFIP, had requested Amarante to summon those AFA leaders due to the case that both drag for alleged irregularities in that institution.
